The New England States are located in the far northeastern corner of the US, and are so named because they exhibit a landscape of rolling hills and rocky coastline reminiscent of England.  Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, as the earliest British settlements in the new world, offer a rich historic and cultural heritage.  Neighboring New York, New JerseyPennsylvania and Maryland with their fertile farmlands also have a similar historical heritages.

The Southern states in the eastern half of the country have warmer sandy beaches and gently rolling farmlands interspersed with hills and low mountains.  They have a slower, more gentile culture and a heritage which includes the opulent plantation society of the old south and the rich African-American culture of their ex slaves.  Although Florida lies within this area, it is more cosmopolitan due to its early Hispanic roots and the heavy influence of Caribbean and South American immigrants.

The Southwest states including CaliforniaNevadaArizonaNew MexicoColorado and Utah offer some spectacular geological features.  These include the Grand CanyonDeath ValleyMonument Valley, the Rocky MountainsBryce Canyon and the fabulously eroded landscape of the Utah color country.  The Southwest also includes the beautiful sandy beaches with its famous surf in California.

The Northwest includes a wild rocky coast, dense forests and rugged mountains as well as a few snow-capped volcanic peaks of Washington and Oregon.  It also offers the spectacular geothermal features of Yellowstone and the exquisite mountains of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

The Midwest spans the great Mississippi Valley drainage system that extends from the Canadian Border to the Gulf of Mexico between the lofty Rocky Mountains and the forested Appalachian Chain of Mountains.  Illinois offers the great midland city of ChicagoTennessee contains the two music capitals of Nashville and Memphis.  At its southwestern extreme Texas extends all the way into the Southwest.
