Hello! I'm an 18 y.o. female from Australia, wanting to travel to America at the end of this year. I have been searching the internet for information on Los Angeles, but so far I haven't found what I'm really looking for. I want to know from a traveller's perspective what the city is like. Is it safe for me to travel alone? Would a 7-day visit be too long? What is the transport like in Los Angeles?

    Any information is greatly appreciated
    Yours
    Sarah

Los Angeles is a great sprawling metropolis that covers a coastal shelf between the Pacific Ocean beaches and surrounding mountains. The basin is about 50 miles wide by 50 miles long. Every square mile of this flat shelf land is covered with urban habitation and commerce. It is connected by a vast web of broad streets and avenues interspersed with several 8 to 12 lane thruways.

There is no one urban center to Los Angeles. Instead it is vaguely divided into several dozen neighborhoods that were once independent communities until the urban sprawl gobbled them all up. Many of these communities have centers dominated by a few large buildings and a shopping or commercial concentration. Outside of these centers, the city is composed of miles and miles of flat urban neighborhood characterized by houses, apartments, shopping strips and low commercial buildings. Tall palm trees tower over most of the buildings.

Most folks living around Los Angeles use private automobiles to get around the city. Their millions of cars often clog even these wide freeways with huge traffic jams that reduce travel to a crawl and turn even a short commute into a long delay. Fortunately, there are good public transportation alternatives. You can get around without a car in Los Angeles. It just won't be very convenient.

In such a large sprawling city, it is hard to make any generalizations about safety. Many of the diverse neighborhoods in Los Angeles are perfectly safe at any time. Other neighborhoods are safe enough during daylight hours, but may be questionable after dark. Some neighborhoods are pretty scary even during the middle of the day. You need to use caution when navigating about the city, especially when doing so without a car.

How much time to spend visiting Los Angeles is entirely dependent on your tastes. There are plenty of things to see and plenty to do in Los Angeles. Besides the beaches, there are museums, amusement parks, shopping centers, cultural events, sports events and sightseeing opportunities. Some people would spend a week in the city and wish they had more time. Some people would get bored with the urban environment after two days and would want to move on to some of the more nature oriented attractions.
